Name/Artist Nick: Rosina Hickman Personal URL (optional): Country: New Zealand Work title/duration: Distant Sounds of Ghent / 11 min 16 sec Year/country when/where it was made: 2020 / filmed in New Zealand and Belgium Short description (1 sentence): In the shadow of the pandemic, a wistful recollection transpires as a nightmarish apparition. Explication (no more than 600 words): Often I record footage with no particular purpose in mind, sometimes forgetting its very existence before rediscovering it years later. Unable to venture far from home during lockdown, I retraced an earlier journey across Europe – footage I had glanced at only briefly before. In the present circumstances, the images assumed a rather haunting quality; working on the film I was conscious that Belgium sadly has the highest death rate per capita from Covid-19 (May 2020). CV (optional): Rosina Hickman is an experimental filmmaker and film historian from New Zealand. She creates minimalist cinematic works that unfold slowly in time, capturing the mood of a certain experience or an encounter with a particular space, such as revisiting the decaying remains of a familiar building or the fading optimism of a journey. Her research focuses on home movies and their contemporary afterlife in the public sphere. She has a PhD in film from Victoria University of Wellington.
