“Generation gegen das Vergessen”
We went on a trip to see the Polish landscape. My father behind the wheel, and my mom as emotional support as we faced the history and the present. My grandfather survived the Wöbbelin concentration camp, my last name appears on the death lists of the Auschwitz administration; family members I have never met.
It was a harrowing summer, while being full of fun, road-tripping with my parents without a real plan, we were also confronted with the reality of today’s fences. There’s a death zone between the Polish EU border and the Belarus border, in which people face the elements as they get trapped between two architectures of oppression.
We are the generation that doesn’t forget because we are reminded of the past by the reality of today.
